About the Kite Fest
The purpose of the Silver & Gold Grid-Iron Classic Kite Fest is four-fold:
- Provide a wholesome, uplifting, family-oriented event where everyone can participate regardless of experience, training, financial means or physical abilities.
- Promote reading as a fundamental basis of education for every child of elementary school age.
- Support education with additional funding and make that funding available to selected participating schools without restriction.
- Patronize those members of the business community whose financial sponsorship make the Kite Festival possible.
2008 READING PROGRAM
How to Earn a Kite – Kites Are Not Free
The Silver & Gold Grid-Iron Classic Kite Fest is designed to promote reading as a habit and encourage students to engage in family-oriented physical activity. Qualifying students earn a high-quality kite for their reading efforts. Also, contributions are made to the _____School Foundation for distribution to schools most actively involved in the kite festival based on attendance.
Reading Guide:
Read at home based upon the guidelines for your grade level and earn a free kite.
Monday, September 8, 2008 – Reading charts are distributed at schools and reading program begins.
Friday, December 12, 2008 – Reading program ends.
All qualifying reading is to be done at home.
Kindergarten and First Grade – 720 minutes total (60 minutes per week minimum)
Second and Third Grade – 1020 minutes total (85 minutes per week minimum)
Fourth and Fifth – 1500 minutes total (125 minutes per week minimum)
Reading can be done any day during the week for as long or as little as the student would like to read as long as the per week reading minimum is achieved.
Kite Distribution:
To receive your kite: Bring the completed three month HOME READING CHART, signed by your parent, to the Silver & Gold Grid-Iron Classic Kite Fest, Friday, December 19, 2008, held at Centennial Park. Kite redemption will begin at 10:00 a.m. and end at 4 p.m.
Drawings for IPods and Silver & Gold Grid-Iron Classic Game Jerseys will be taken from the reading charts that were dropped off by the children that attended the Kite Fest.
Winners will be notified within 30 days following the Kite Fest.
Rules for Largest Kite Contest
- Kite and kite materials can be made from any fabric or appropriate sail material students may choose to use.
- Kite may be frameless (no sticks) or use spars (sticks).
- School facility members may help students with design, materials, and flying technique.
- Only two faculty members may be on the launch field once kite is called into competition.
- Teams and faculty must check in with Judges (and be available) 10 minutes before the competition.
- Each team must provide their own flying line (or lines).
- Kite must fly for at least 60 seconds without touching the ground, a person, a team member, a fence or a building.
- Size of kite will be determined by width (at widest point), height (at highest point), and depth (at deepest point) if single surface kite. Multi-surfaced kites will be determined by height (at highest point) and circumference or a combination of the above. Judges rule is final.
- There is no limit on the number of students needed to launch kite.
- Each kite will be allowed 3 (three) attempts to launch.
Rules for Rokkaku Competition
- All line used for each kite must be signed out by the team captain from the judge at the time of competition.
- Students only on the flying field after launch command.
- All Rokkaku kites in the competition must launch in unison when the order is given.
- A maximum of 3 students per kite may be on the field at the time of launch.
- Once launch has been completed there may only a maximum of two (2) team members on the flying field.
- Any alterations of adulterations of materials of Rokkaku Kite or line will call for immediate disqualification.
- All teams flying must be prepared to be aggressive in their flying and keep their feet within the competition area.
- Team will be disqualified if fewer than 2 members in competition are after launch.
- Last kite in the air still in control of a team member is the clear winner.
- Judge has final call on all matters in this competition.
- Teams and school staff member must check in with Judges 10 minutes before competition.
